When an unconventional couple from Connecticut seek psychiatric help, their lives spin out of control. Allis and Charley subject their four children to a daily downpour of therapy. Following their doctor’s instructions, the family records its own arguments. Their moving audio diaries tell a story of abuse and institutionalised misogyny. These recordings were kept so that they would be discovered after their deaths. The film uses this material combined with home movies to reconstruct a family’s battle and to talk about the values of 1960s American culture.
