Macarena, the film’s director, grew up without her parents. At the age of four she had to leave her native country for her own safety and lived with family in France for a few years until her mother decided to return to Chile. She was taken to Cuba, where she lived with 60 other children and 20 adults at the ‘Proyecto Hogares’, a place set up to take in the children of the militants who, in the 1970s, went back to Chile to fight for a better society, against the dictatorship. All of Macarena’s childhood memories come from that time, from the children who, like her, had parents who existed only in letters. Some of them, now adults, have come to understand their parents. Most have not.
