In 1980 César Alarcón travelled to Pompeii to record sounds from the great eruption of Vesuvius. He did not find what he was looking for, but unexpectedly a strange and far more recent phrase was captured on tape. La ciudad de los signos is a journey through the filmography of Italian director Roberto Rossellini. His cinema opened the breach through which all modern film would later pass. The places he used as locations still bear traces of those shoots. Traces that become signs forming part of an immense abstract city built behind the backs of the living and the dead.
