Across five decades, Ginger Baker has been one of the most influential and innovative drummers in rock. He has played with everyone from Eric Clapton and Johnny Rotten to Max Roach and Fela Kuti. Behind his drum kit he was in absolute command, but away from it his drug-fuelled self-destruction alienated family, friends and bandmates. Since 1999 Baker has lived in South Africa in self-imposed exile with a young wife and 39 polo horses. But at 73, far from having calmed down, he is as wild and mischievous as ever.
