Every morning children make the journey from home to school. Walking, by car or running, they leave behind their parents, their dreams and the fears of the night before. They walk alone, or with a friend, trying to avoid the neighbourhood bully, taking along a younger brother who does not want to go to nursery. At the end of the school day, those same children make the journey home. Side Walk weaves together the parallel stories of seven children going to and from school in a single journey. In this unprotected, neutral half-light we witness the most intimate moments in which a child’s sense of independence develops. It is a reflection on the awareness of the very young, a rite of passage that in the blink of an eye ushers them into adulthood. The happiest, cruellest, most magical and most exciting moments of this daily journey become the clear-sighted crossing of a revealing experience.
