‘During the 1980s the spread of crack and cocaine use swept through the poor neighbourhoods of American cities. As parents fell into addiction, social services took charge of a generation of children. Through the character of Love, a young woman who has just had a baby, Love & Diane tells the story of one of these three-generation Black New York families. Shot over several years, the film is a candid and extraordinarily intimate portrait of a mother and daughter desperately seeking love and forgiveness yet trapped in a devastating cycle. It also calls into question a perverse system that, while providing help to families with no resources, in some ways obstructs their individual attempts to improve their situation.’ T. Garrel
