Edition 2018

Golden Dawn Girls

“What has happened in Greece?” filmmaker Håvard Bustnes asks out loud at the start of this unsettling documentary. In recent years, the image of a country of sunny beaches and friendly people has been darkened by political ideologies close to Nazism, embodied in Golden Dawn, the party that won 21 seats in the Greek Parliament in the 2012 elections.

When a number of the party’s leading members are imprisoned, their women (among them the daughter of leader Nikos Michaloliakos) take the reins of the organisation and carry on spreading its message. All of them are experienced enough to avoid cracks in the official discourse and make sure the interviews they give come out exactly as they want. But in a moment of distraction, the director runs off with the camera and manages to record compromising images of the neo-Nazi party. The resulting material, together with archive footage, leaves no doubt about the depraved side of this political party and reveals the ever clearer gulf between reality and the image they try to project.
