‘Three months before the elections, the president of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, declared: you have no alternative, you will vote for me! And that is exactly what happened in March 2006. We began filming in January of that year, two months before the elections, and carried on throughout the whole year. We wanted to understand why 86% of the population decided to vote for Lukashenko.’ The film follows closely the difficulties faced by the opposition after the election period. Drawing on a wide range of archive material published during the Lukashenko era, the director draws a parallel between history and the present day. The film shows the falsehood built into election propaganda, as well as the ambiguous and even contradictory attitude of ordinary people. By analysing opinions, comparing different historical moments, mocking the dictator’s arrogance and attitudes and admiring the courage and dedication of the new generation, the film gives us some of the keys to understanding what is happening in the middle of Europe.
