Grab and Run
Since the independence of Kirgizstan in 1991, there has been a rebirth of the ancestral tradition of Ala-Kachuu, which could be translated as grab and run . Over half of the country’s women are kidnapped by men who follow the tradition and become their husbands. Some suffer real agony and manage to escape, but most end up giving in due to fear of public scandal. The origin of this practice comes from ancient nomadic customs and surprisingly is still alive in modern Kirgizstan. Although Ala-Kachuu was banned during Soviet times and the law states it’s illegal, it’s unusual for the law to protect women against this violent abuse. Filmmaker Roser Corella makes a shocking film about an incomprehensible reality, filmed with admirable courage and which stirs us up.
