What Walaa Wants
Walaa is a teenage girl living in the Balata refugee camp, in the city of Nablus (Palestine). She is brave and stubborn, and she has decided to join the forces of the Palestinian National Authority. The entrance tests for the police force are very hard, but if she passes them she will become one of the few women police officers in the West Bank. She is still young and immature, but resignation is not part of her vocabulary.
Walaa’s life is marked by the instinct for survival and by overcoming great obstacles. After eight years, her mother returns from prison, convicted of helping a suicide bomber. Her little brother wants to imitate his idols in the street fighting. All of it is a nest of contradictions for Walaa’s plans for the future.
A film that brings us close to the life of a girl from the age of 15 to 21 who, ready to go all the way, dares to question what is established and to cast doubt on the structures around her. With all that, will she finally be able to fulfil her dream of becoming a police officer?
