Edition 2017

Inside the Chinese Closet

In a society such as China’s, where homosexuality is unacceptable, Andy and Cherry struggle to meet their parents’ expectations.

Andy, a successful architect living in Shanghai, decides to come out. His father, ashamed and disappointed, demands that he marry a woman to keep the family’s honour; Cherry, married to a gay man, intends to adopt a child to satisfy her mother’s demand that appearances be kept up.

Andy and Cherry’s effort to lead a full life at the cost of faking certain cultural stereotypes lays bare an entire system of values. Desperate but always looking ahead, their courage shows us a modern, young China searching for its space of freedom in a society marked by strong traditional values.
