Chris the Swiss
In early January 1992 his lifeless body was found near Vukovar (Croatia), dressed as a mercenary. According to the autopsy, he died by strangulation. In fact, a few weeks earlier Chris had become a member of the PIV (First International Volunteers Battalion), a paramilitary group founded by Eduardo Rózsa-Flores, “Chico”, whose job was to “clean up” the Serbian population in the border areas.
Twenty years later, filmmaker Anja Kofmel investigates why he died and what took her cousin to the war. Thanks to a personal diary Chris left behind, Anja begins to imagine what his last months of life were like. What starts as curiosity about the motives of a 27-year-old Swiss man who went off to cover a war becomes a careful and personal investigation. To carry it out, she gathers testimony from members of her family, his former journalist colleagues, PIV mercenaries and even the former terrorist Carlos the Jackal.
The picture Anja Kofmel gradually builds of Chris’s last months turns into a deeply personal animated world that recreates the final days of a young journalist lost in the darkness of a brutal war, like a death foretold.
