Edition 2015

Alentejo, Alentejo

In Alentejo, Southern Portugal, amateur choir groups get together to sing traditional tunes and improvise lyrics about current issues. It’s called cante . A unique form of expression that conveys Portugal’s past through the passionate voices of changed present. C ante comes from taverns and rural environments where miners and farmers would get together in choir groups to sing the songs their parents had taught them. When we experiment the emotional intensity of cante for the first time, we feel the weight of history through the voices of a land that moves us with unexplainable emotion.
