He was born in Argentina but raised in New York until his family went into exile in Chile during Salvador Allende’s government. Dorfman became a cultural adviser to the Chilean socialist president. He was one of the few in Allende’s circle to survive the military coup of 11 September 1973. Years later he was told his life had been spared because ‘someone had to survive to tell this story’. The documentary includes valuable archive material and is based in part on Dorfman’s acclaimed book Heading South, Looking North.
