Two Catalan productions have achieved success, with audience figures of more than 50,000 viewers: Garbo. L’espia, the first documentary by Edmon Roch, and Bicicleta, cullera, poma, Carles Bosch’s latest work, centred on former president Pasqual Maragall and his fight against Alzheimer’s disease. What is the secret? The people behind them open a debate on the strengths and weaknesses that determine a documentary’s success, and on the secrets of winning over the market and the viewer. For this case study we are joined by Tono Folguera, a television and film producer responsible for documentaries such as Bicicleta, cullera, poma; Edmon Roch, head of the production company Ikiru Films and director of the documentary Garbo. The Man Who Saved the World; and Pio Vernis and Marta Baldó, heads of marketing at WAW (Working At Weekend), responsible for film launches for various distributors and production companies.
