Even mad people can do extraordinary things. Pier Gianni Burreddu certainly has: he has sailed across the Atlantic alongside other men and women living with mental illness, played his bass with dolphins and whales, come through sea storms unharmed, but above all he has been able to face his illness openly. The documentary tells the story of Pier Gianni’s voyage across the Atlantic from Cádiz to the Antilles on a ship of madmen. The day the boat left the Spanish coast behind, heading south-west, he little imagined that the ocean route was taking him back home, to Sardinia. During the voyage Pier Gianni relives his past: the tormented relationship with his parents, mental illness, electroshock, the many stays in hospital, but also the life force of music. Landing in the new world, he found the courage and the desire to return to Sassari, where it had all begun many years earlier.
